How We Tested

Over the last few months, I have tested all of the knives in the Wusthof Classic line.

I started by rough cutting a pile of potatoes to test each knife’s ability to handle these simple everyday cutting tasks. The thin blade on the paring knife was dull and didn’t cut well at all, so it wasn’t included in the test. The rest of the knives performed similarly, though with slight differences in their ability to cut cleanly through the different types of vegetables. The chef’s knife took care of large cutting jobs like celery with ease, while the serrated edge on the kitchen shears worked best on smaller items like onions.

The steak knives were fine at their intended task, but they didn’t do anything to really stand out. They are comfortable to hold and cut easily through meat, though I did notice that the wider serrated blade on the kitchen shears worked better. On the other hand, I generally prefer a sharp tip for precision slicing, though the Wusthof steak knives are sharp enough that they can be used for piercing meat if you have no other option.

Then I moved on to slicing delicate herbs. While most herb knives work well enough, I found that their blades were slightly too flexible and wide-set to get the job done efficiently. The narrowness of the blade on the Wusthof Classic Santoku knife made it a quick favorite for this job.

Slicing tomatoes was another test. The thin flexible blade on one of my cheaper knives works well at this, but it’s almost too good – I have occasionally found myself cutting so thin that the slices come out the other side. The blade on the Wusthof Classic chef’s knife was a little thick for this, but it wasn’t bad either.

Finally, I wanted to test how well each of these knives handled bread. I’m not sure why exactly this is important, but I do know that if you talk to enough chefs, you will eventually hear someone say that you are not a real chef unless your knives can slice through a baguette cleanly. The task seemed simple enough, but it turned out to be one of the most difficult tests. I tried all of the knives myself and then watched as my husband did his best with each of them. However, neither of us could get through half a baguette before the knives started to squash the loaf instead of cleanly slicing it in two.

How To Choose Wusthof Knives

Of course, price is the first thing to consider when buying anything, but it should not be your ultimate decision-maker. You might come across a few types of knives that are 10 times more expensive than others; however, even these high-priced knives can be affordable if they are provided with a lifetime warranty and free servicing by the manufacturers.

And you might come across top-rated models of Wusthof which are really expensive; however, these knives provide great value for money. These high-quality knives can last for decades without needing any sharpenings and other services.

When buying high-quality knives, make sure they are worth the money you pay for them. The very best of Wusthof’s knives come with a laser-controlled edge, which contains more carbon than any other knives; this results in sharper knife blades and edges that stay sharp longer. Moreover, there is no need to work hard to sharpen these knives so you can cut through almost anything with great ease.

Do not buy knives that are heavy and bulky since they may be difficult to use for some people. The average weight of Wusthof knives is about 7 ounces, however, the newer models weigh around 4 ounces only. Moreover, the weight should be evenly distributed in the knife so it will feel comfortable in your hand when you are cutting or slicing through something.

Most of the Wusthof knives come with a lifetime warranty which means that you can easily repair or replace these knives if they break. However, bear in mind that this warranty does not cover issues related to mishandling or misuse of knives.

One of the most important things to consider when buying a knife is the size of your hand. If you are a right-handed person, buy knives that have a smooth handle so it will be easy to grip it firmly in order to cut through something.

Wusthof Knives FAQs

1. What is the Wusthof knife?

A Wusthof knife is a full tang, high-quality knife with distinctive bolster and contoured handles. The company has been in business since 1814. Often the words “Wusthof” and “knives” are used interchangeably.

A: The Wusthof Classic line of knives is the company’s most popular. Other best-selling knife lines include the Wusthof Gourmet, Wustof Trident, and Silverpoint brands.
